Adrenal Fatigue

Are you almost always feeling stressed? Carrying around an overload of stress can be bad for your adrenal glands. Adrenal fatigue is the result of chronic stress over your lifetime--when years of stress catch up with you. And, with life sometimes feeling like a rat race, our adrenal glands are just trying to keep up with managing our stress load. Adrenal gland dysfunction is not uncommon, and luckily, it is also treatable.

Adrenal fatigue doesn’t just impact women-- it also impacts men. Adrenal fatigue in men occurs when a man’s stress levels remain elevated for a prolonged period of time. Prolonged, elevated stress can result in abnormal cortisol levels and, in turn, affect all the other hormones in the body, producing a chain-like reaction.

While your body attempts to maintain this abnormal cortisol production, a hormone known as dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is negatively impacted by these cortisol levels. Men experiencing both high and low cortisol levels, and the resulting DHEA fluctuations, may exhibit similar symptoms. That’s why a properly-administered testing process, performed by an experienced medical professional, is crucial in diagnosing adrenal fatigue.

Common Symptoms

There are many seemingly unrelated symptoms of adrenal gland dysfunction. Below are some of the most common in men with adrenal fatigue:

  • Fatigue
  • Needing to push “extra hard” to get through the day
  • Feeling “wound up” or high-strung
  • Depression
  • Sensation of running on adrenaline all the time
  • Lack of focus
  • A tendency to feel cold
  • New allergies
  • Diminished sex drive
  • Aching joints
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Loss of muscle mass and strength

Men and women can experience similar symptoms, such as troubling sleep patterns, feeling like they “hit a wall” during the day, and constantly feeling like they are running low on energy.

Adrenal fatigue in men is quite distinct in that abnormal cortisol levels cause their testosterone levels to drop. As a result, adrenal fatigue in men can be commonly mistaken as just low testosterone levels because of symptoms like low sex drive, fatigue, and a loss of muscle mass.

We use saliva testing to diagnose adrenal fatigue, and we look at your hormone levels as a whole to develop a personalized treatment plan for your specific needs.
