Biotin (Vitamin B7) and Blood Test Interference

Biotin (Vitamin B7) interferes with certain blood tests.  Could your test results be less than accurate because of biotin?

BIOTIN interferes with certain blood test results. This is why I have my patients not take any biotin supplements before having certain blood tests drawn. This is also why it's important for your medical providers know everything you're taking, even if it's something as harmless as a B vitamin. (Biotin is Vitamin B7...)

I became aware of this issue about a year ago because I order a lot of thyroid tests and the results sometimes didn't make sense in the past. When a colleague shared an article about biotin interference, a lightbulb went on in my brain. When I re-ran those tests after the patients didn't take biotin for a couple of days, I got quite different results.

This interference can be very serious.  In fact, one death has been reported because a test to determine if a patient was having a heart attack showed that he was not.

Biotin can be very helpful, especially for skin, hair, and nail issues, which is why so many people take it.  But please be aware that it intereferes with certain blood tests!
